Patterned Ground, Sibiria
In the Lena Delta, 600 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, the ground is permanently frozen to a depth of several hundred metres. Only the top layer – 50 to 100 cm thick - thaws up in summer. Because the water cannot trickle away through the icy subsurface, large parts of the delta are transformed into a water landscape. (aerial view)
