Every year during the Australian summer monsoon period (between November and April), the Tanami desert is exposed to heavy rainfalls. Rainwater collects in the valleys and on the plains between the kilometers-long dune crest lines. As the water evaporates slowly in the course of the year, it leaves behind salt and clay sediments.
